Letter from Hon. Edward Erskine, the British Chargé d'Affaires in Sweden, to Dr. Ernst Becker reporting progress on the photography of the Raphael drawings and other works in Stockholm.

5 Sep 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 2 documents (8 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/533, 533a

(533) Erskine reports that Hansen will soon complete the photographing of the drawings, with satisfactory results and at a lower price than expected. He will photograph the Mignard painting in the Royal Museum. Mr Grubb wishes to know whether the Prince Consort would like a photograph made of a portrait of Cromwell, attributed to Sir Peter Lely, which is also in the Museum. Erskine will have the plates carefully packed and dispatched from Gothenburg to Hull, from where arrangements should be made to get it safely to London.

(533a) A note by Becker at the end of the letter records his response on 14 September that Hansen should add a good print from each negative to his bill, and that the Prince does not want the Lely portrait photographed 'as the best pictures of Cromwell are in England'.
