FRANZ BACKOFEN (1806-81)
Letter from F. Backofen to Dr. Ernst Becker sending a photograph of Raphael's picture of the Archangel Raphael from the Darmstadt collections, explaining and apologising for its inadequacy.

Backofen writes that he would have sent Becker (photographic) prints of the Archangel long ago had they turned out satisfactorily; instead he he is enclosing a small photograph which [?Seegerd] reluctantly allowed him to take of the picture in his studio. But he was not allowed to try again in the open, in his garden, because of potential damage to the picture, although this might have been the only chance of obtaining a good photograph.
Backofen thinks this might be possible later if Becker pressed for it. In order to compensate for this unsatisfactory photograph, he sends Becker some of his recent landscape photographs of Darmstadt and Heidelberg as a souvenir.
