TASCHER DE LA PAGERIE, CARL, COUNT

Letter from Count Tascher de la Pagerie to Dr. Ernst Becker thanking him for his letter and giving him the name of Don Juan de Ortez de Zarrate, who arranged for the photographing of the Raphael portrait belonging to the Duke of Alba.

4 Dec 1858

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/315

The Count thanks Becker for his letter and is glad that the commission he was given has been successfully completed. He states that his correspondent in Madrid (who arranged for the photography of the Duke of Alba's portrait of a man in black by Raphael) was the Duke's former governor, now his friend and archivist, Don Juan de Ortez de Zarrate. The Count does not think he needs any remuneration, but he would probably appreciate a letter of thanks in the Prince Consort's name.

A note by Becker at the end of the letter records that he wrote to Don Juan de Ortez on 21 January thanking him on the Prince's behalf and asking him to give the Duke of Alba a collection of 20 photographic facsimiles of drawings by Raphael at Windsor as a mark of the Prince's appreciation.
