Prince Albert's composition Invocazione all'armonia (Invocation to Harmony) was composed in 1845, and scored for four voices and soloists with piano accompaniment. Many of his vocal works set poems by others, particularly by his brother Ernst, but Invocazione was a setting of a poem by Albert himself. The piece was played at the laying of the foundation stone of the Royal Albert Hall, 20 May 1867, as recorded by Queen Victoria in her journal: dearest Albert's composition the "Invocazione all'Armonia" was performed under the direction of Costa ... How I thought of dearest Albert's feeling so shy about ever having this composition performed, which I had helped in writing down for him, & singing the solos for him. This printed edition was bound for the Prince, with his name on the front cover.
