Extract from the 1845 catalogue of Count Schönborn's picture gallery at Schloss Weissenstein in Pommersfelden, concerning a mother and child formerly attributed to Raphael.
1 - 30 Jun 1861Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (2 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/484
The extract describes this painting as probably the finest in the collection, a Madonna and Child; she sits with her left arm resting on a pedestal, holding the child on her lap with the other hand. He is seated on a 'sap-green' cushion and points to an urn standing in the background. This indicates that it is actually a painting of a mother and her child mourning the death of her husband.
The attribution of the painting is still disputed: the earliest catalogue, by Byss, published in 1719, and later lists and writings, attributed it to Raphael. Graf Erwein von Schönborn and Dr. Schorn, however, thought it was by Leonardo da Vinci. A quotation from Dr. Schorn's commentary in the Stuttgarter Kunstblatt follows, giving the reasons for his conclusion. Gustav Waagen, on the other hand, thinks it is by Andrea Solario and says it corresponds in every respect to Solario's Madonna suckling the Child in the Louvre.
Written in an unknown hand on paper belonging to Joseph Albert, photographer at the court of Bavaria. The extract is from Joseph Heller's catalogue, 'Die Gräflich Schönborn'sche Gemäldesammlung zu Schloss Weissenstein in Pommersfelden...', Bamberg, 1845.
