CARL RULAND (1834-1907)

Copy letter from Charles Ruland to Herr Heubel thanking him for permission to have Raphael drawings in his possession photographed for the Prince Consort's collection and enquiring about an engraving of a Raphael painting in Berlin.

7 Oct 1861

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (8 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/491

Ruland writes that because he has been away on the Continent he is only now able to reply to Heubel's letter of 9 August (see VIC/ADDA10/85/489). He has shown it to the Prince Consort, who has asked him to thank Heubel for his kind permission for the Raphael drawings in his possession to be photographed.

Baron von Stockmar will arrange for the work to be done by a photographer who has already done very satisfactory work for HRH, and who can be trusted to take the greatest care in handling the drawings. The Prince Consort will be happy to have copies of the photographs made for Heubel. Ruland thanks Heubel for the information he sent about the other Raphael, or Raphaelesque, drawings he has, and asks for these 5 to be photographed as well, namely the rider with the lion, the trial scene with assembled people, the two riders and people, the merwoman on the dolphin, and (Saints) Catherine and Barbara [evidently a mistake for Dorothea].

Ruland goes on to ask whether Heubel knows anything about an engraving by a certain [?Hoffmann] of Raphael's painting of the Holy Family with St Jerome and St Francis (which is in Berlin) that is reported to be about to be published. If this is the case, or if it has already appeared, Ruland asks Heubel to obtain a good print for the Prince Consort. He concludes by saying he hopes to send Heubel the promised list of desiderata for the Prince's collection in about a fortnight.
