CARL RULAND (1834-1907)
Copy letter from Charles Ruland to Dr. Kuhlmann in Lille, asking whether the photographer Mr Bingham has begun photographing the Wicar collection of drawings.
27 Apr 1860Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/240
Ruland asks whether Kuhlmann has any news of Bingham and whether he has begun photographing the Wicar collection. Ruland has heard that Bingham has been in Paris since January, and fears that he has no immediate intention of beginning the work he has been commissioned to do. He has not responded to Ruland's letter in January asking about drawings in the Louvre.
Ruland informs Kuhlmann that the silicatisation trials are continuing at both Osborne and Windsor, and that Kuhlmann's comments on the earlier experiments have helped improve the results.
See PP Osborne 432-434 regarding silica of clay experiments at Osborne in 1856, which seem to be for agricultural purposes but are perhaps related to this correspondence with Dr. Kuhlmann. It is not clear what the 1860 trials were, but it has been assumed these were to do with the painting of the exterior of buildings, judging from Kuhlmann's earlier letters mentioning silicious paint.
Related Material: For related material, see PP Osborne 432-434.
