NEHER, BERNHARD, PROFESSOR; DIRECTOR OF STUTTGART SCHOOL OF ART

Copy letter from Professor Neher, Director of the Stuttgart School of Art, to [Ludwig Gruner] sending the copy he has made of his Raphael drawing for the Prince Consort.

12 May 1861

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/486

Professor Neher writes that he does not wish to trouble [Gruner] with the reasons why he took it into his own hands to make the copy of his drawing which the Prince Consort wished for, but that he will be happy if it gives pleasure to Gruner and the Prince. Knowing the paintings in the Farnesina so well, Gruner will no doubt remember the beautiful head of the Grace, seen from behind, in the Marriage of Psyche. Professor Neher's drawing, he thinks, is a study from nature for that head, and its grace and beauty is such as few artists other than Raphael have achieved. He asks for no more than the price he previously asked, although the work gave him much trouble and, in particular, the deep tone of the original is hard to achieve. He wishes Gruner a good journey.

See VIC/ADDA10/85/478 for Neher's letter offering to have a copy of the drawing made.
