ARTARIA & CO.

Bill from Antaria & Co. for photography of works by Raphael in the Esterhazy collection in Vienna.

29 Aug 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (2 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/413

The bill states that it is for 8 glass plate negatives of paintings and drawings by Raphael in the Esterhazy Gallery in Vienna, and lists them:

Firstly two oil paintings one a Madonna and the other a portrait (no further details given). The drawings are listed as:
'Madonna and child, surrounded by angels'
'Study for the Disputa'
'Academic studies of a man (Hieronymus)'
'Head of Castor'
'Female figure (for the Judgment of Paris)'
'Seated female figure'

The photographer was paid 12 florins per item; the other costs shown are for tips for the Gallery staff, transport and other incidental costs, and 10% 'provision', presumably Antaria's commission. A note at the foot of the bill states that the dimensions of the originals are marked in Viennese inches on the black paper framing each glass plate negative.
