A press cutting from a Belgian newspaper announcing the forthcoming public sale of a painting by Raphael; the second from the Journal des Débats mentioning an article on Raphael by the editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Charles Blan

1 - 31 Jan 1860

Loose printed paper; mounted | 3 documents (3 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/517

The first cutting announces that an original painting on wood by Raphael depicting Ceres or the Goddess of Agriculture is to be auctioned in Brussels on 26 January. It was once in François I's Royal Gallery and served as a model for the frescoes in the Loggie at the Vatican, and also for depictions of Agriculture in Gobelins tapestries in the reign of Louis XIII.

It was withdrawn from a projected sale in Paris for lack of serious interest. The second cutting, an article by Louis Ratisbonne, describes the recent publication of four volumes containing the [previous] year's 24 issues of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts and draws attention to an article by the editor-in-chief, Charles Blanc, on Raphael.

The cuttings were enclosed in a letter from Sylvain Van de Weyer to the Prince Consort (VIC/ADDA10/85/515). He underlined the lines referring to Charles Blanc's study of Raphael in the second cutting. See VIC/ADDA10/85/519 for a photograph of the painting mentioned.
