MARIE-AMÉLIE COINY (ACTIVE 1800)

Two nymphs dancing in a portico

c.1800

Etching with engraving | 13.5 x 13.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853719

An etching by Marie-Amélie Coiny copying, in reverse, a print by Pietro Santi Bartoli which reproduces stucco decoration in the vault of the seventh bay of the Loggia, designed by Raphael and executed by his workshop (c.1517-19), in the Vatican. Lettered with attribution of the designs of the stucchi to Raphael at bottom left and signed by the printmaker at bottom right. Trimmed on all sides. One of a group of six prints by Coiny included in the Raphael Collection after the loggia stucchi.

For the series of prints by Pietro Santi Bartoli, c.1670-77, see RCIN 853715.a-aq.

The repeating sequence of decoration in the Loggia - see Dacos 2008 (Bibliographic References) for more information - is strongly influenced by the antique; Raphael had studied antique sculpture and painting in Rome.
