Vatican Frescoes

PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO THE SCHOOL OF MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

The Sea Victory at Ostia

c.1515-50

Engraving | 37.9 x 52.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852846

An anonymous engraving reproducing (in reverse) the composition of the fresco of The Victory at Ostia, painted in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican in c.1514-15 after designs by Raphael. Lettered on the flag flying above the tower: SPQR (in reverse). Inscribed in ink near the lower left corner: R. Lower left corner made up. Another impression can be found at RCIN 852847.

Bartsch catalogued this engraving as by the School of Marcantonio Raimondi, and described it as made in a manner close to Marco Dente. As the engraving differs from the fresco in several details, it has been suggested that a preparatory drawing for the fresco may have been used as direct source for the engraving. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
