A print reproducing the School of Athens, painted by Raphael around 1509-10 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Lettered with production details and dedication to Pope Pius VI (r.1775-99). Annotated in pencil on both sides. Stamped with black ink doublette stamp (and indecipherable mark) in the lower right corner. Not in Ruland (1876).

Plate 1 from a series of 8 reproducing Raphael's Stanze frescoes, including the Disputation of the Holy Sacrament (RCIN 852371), the Parnassus (RCIN 852458), the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple (RCINs 852671.a, 852672), the Meeting between Leo the Great and Attila (RCIN 852716, 852715.a), the Fire of Borgo (RCIN 852817.a) and the Miracle of the Mass at Bolsena (RCIN 852703.a). The series was produced between 1779 and 1784. The present engraving has been described as presented to Pope Pius VI in 1779, together with the engraving of the 'Disputa'.
