An engraving reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco The sacrifice of Cain and Abel painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the second bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. First state. For an impression of the second state of this print, which is dated 1544, see RCIN 853652. On watermarked paper (see Woodward, nos. 243-258).

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
