Vatican Frescoes

The four rectangular panels painted on the vault of the Stanza della Segnatura

c.1827-1874

Engraving with etching | RCIN 852611

A print reproducing the four rectangular panels painted in the corners of the vault of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Lettered with artists' names. With coat of arms at lower centre and publishing line at lower left. State without dedication. The head of the winged putto holding a book standing on a cloud to the left of the figure of Astronomy (lower right image) is reproduced in reverse in the lower right corner. Annotated in pencil on both sides. Not listed in Ruland (1876). Possibly from Pietro de Brognoli's series of prints after Raphael's Stanze frescoes and Sistine Chapel tapestries, dated 1874.

The four rectangular panels represent (starting from top right and going closkwise) The Fall, the personification of Astronomy, Apollo and Marsyas, and the Judgement of Solomon.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
