AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The adoration of the golden calf

c.1853-76

Salted paper print | 23.8 x 37.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853550

A photograph of a drawing in the Uffizi, Florence (inv.no.510 E), attributed, with a question mark, to Raphael. The drawing is squared up in black chalk, possibly for transfer as the modello for the fresco 'The adoration of the golden calf' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the ninth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Not in Ruland (1876). See RCIN 853549 for another photograph of this drawing.

Dacos (see Bibliographic References) has attributed this drawing to Bartolomeo di David, who completed the scene around the figures painted by Giulio Romano.
