Study for the figure of Diogenes in 'The School of Athens'

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 852557

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1509) now in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (inv. no.380). All studies refer to the figure of the philosopher lying on the steps in the centre of Raphael's 'School of Athens', painted in c.1509-10 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Following Vasari's account of the fresco, this figure is usually identified as the Greek philosopher Diogenes the Cynic (Diogenes of Sinope).
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
