JOSEPH ALOIS DRDA (PRAGUE 1783-PRAGUE 1883)

Set of prints reproducing heads from 'The School of Athens'

c.1805-25

Engravings with etchings | RCIN 852537

A set of engravings reproducing heads of figures from Raphael's fresco of The School of Athens, painted in c.1509-10 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. The set was engraved by Joseph Alois Drda after designs by Joseph Bergler. A print by Josef Quaisser after a drawing by Joseph Bergler (852537.ad) was catalogued by Ruland as being part of this same set. Almost all of the prints bear Raphael's name and are lettered with either the engraver's name or initials (or both). Some are dated (with dates ranging from 1805 to 1824), and a few bear the designer's name. From a series also reproducing heads from the frescoes of the Disputa and The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple (see RCINs 852384, 852675).
