Pilaster decorations in the Loggia

A photograph of the verso of a drawing now in the Louvre (inv.no.780) copying elements of the decoration of the pilaster between the fifth and sixth bays of the Loggia, designed by Raphael and executed by his workshop (c.1517-19) in the Vatican. For a photograph of the recto of this drawing, which contains copies after other pilasters, see RCIN 853726. The drawing was catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being in the collection of Édouard Gatteaux in Paris and it bears his collector's stamp (Lugt 852). A fire at the Gatteaux house in 1871 destroyed a significant portion of the collection, but this drawing survived.

The repeating sequence of decoration in the Logge - see Dacos 2008 (Bibliographic References) for more information - is strongly influenced by the antique; Raphael had studied antique sculpture and painting in Rome.
