AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Moses parts the Red Sea

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 19.3 x 27.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853529

A photograph of a drawing in the Louvre (inv.no.3850) which is considered to be the modello for the fresco 'Moses parts the Red Sea' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the eighth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. The drawing, which has been squared (presumably for transfer), is attributed by the Louvre to either Raphael or Giovanni Francesco Penni; Dacos (2008; see Bibliographic References) attributes it (and the background in the fresco itself) to Bartolomeo di David.
