AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PENNI (1496-C. 1536)
Jacob's dream
c.1853-76Lithographic reproduction | 19.2 x 26.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853462
A lithographic reproduction of a drawing attributed to Giovanni Francesco Penni in the British Museum (inv.no.1860,0616.82) which is generally believed to have been the modello for the fresco 'Jacob's dream' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the sixth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. See 853461 for a photograph of the drawing.
The drawing, previously owned by William II, King of the Netherlands and Thomas Lawrence, amongst others, was evidently trimmed at the top before it was reproduced in this image as it is missing the figure of God the father, who appears in the fresco.
