A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, and depicting the right half of the composition of the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'Jacob wrestles with the angel' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the sixth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.
In this drawing, the column of figures in the background are depicted as having advanced further forward than in other copies after the fresco, such as the etching by Pietro Santo Bartoli (see RCIN 853664), and what appears to be the sun behind the hill has replaced a plume of smoke.
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
