AFTER A WORK PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Herm with raised left arm, the right arm lowered

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 19.5 x 10.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852863

A photograph of a drawing now in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. no.A 65). The drawing is a preparatory study for the herm to the right of King Astolph, painted on the dado of the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican. The authorship of the drawing (sometimes attributed to Raphael and sometimes to Giulio Romano) is subject of much debate. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
