Head of a bearded man [from 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple']

Engraving | RCIN 852679

A print of the head and shoulders of a long-haired bearded man looking at the viewer; set in an oval. Lettered with identification of the sitter and production details. With the collector's mark of Paolo Caronni (Lugt 4187). The figure reproduced in this print is one of the Pope's litter-bearers from Raphael's fresco of 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple', painted in 1511-12 in the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican.

The figure was described by Vasari as the portrait of Marcantonio Raimondi and this identification has been generally accepted ever since.
