Vatican Frescoes

Four naked standing figures

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 852514

A photograph of a drawing now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.231) where it is currently catalogued as by a follower of Raphael. Ruland connected the sheet with Raphael's fresco of Parnassus in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican, and described it as 'a (caricatured?) pen and ink croquis of the group of Homer in undraped figures'. Parker (1956) thought that there is no visible connection with Raphael or his school and attributed the drawing to an early 16th-century draughtsman. See Bibliographic References.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
