THEODOR LANGER (ACTIVE 1875)

Four ceiling paintings from the Stanza di Eliodoro

c.1870-1890

Engraving | 68.3 x 86.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852742

A print reproducing the four main scenes of the ceiling decoration of the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican. Lettered with artists' and printer's names below image. With coat of arms at lower centre, and head of a caryatid (detail taken from the Stanza di Eliodoro). State without dedication and publishing line. Annotated in pencil on both sides. Not in Ruland (1876). Described as from Pietro de Brognoli's series of prints after Raphael's Stanze frescoes and Sistine Chapel tapestries dated 1874 (Höper 2001).

The four ceiling paintings show scenes from the Old Testament which are connected with the frescoes painted beneath them in the Stanza di Eliodoro. The four ceiling paintings reproduced in this print are: The Sacrifice of Abraham (top left; painted above the fresco of the Mass of Bolsena), Jacob’s Ladder (top right; painted above 'The Liberation of St. Peter'), The Burning Bush (lower left; painted above 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple'), and God Appearing to Noah (lower right; painted above 'The Meeting of Leo I and Attila').
