AFTER CHARLES PAUL JEAN-BAPTIST BOURGEVIN DE VIALART, COMTE DE SAINT-MORYS (D. 1795)

David's victory over the Ammonites

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 17.0 x 26.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853601

A photograph of an etching which reproduces a drawing which can very likely be identified with one now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest (inv.no.2194). This pen and ink drawing, which is squared in black chalk, has been attributed to Perino del Vaga by a number of scholars, and thought to be a preparatory study or modello for the fresco 'David's victory over the Ammonites' by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the eleventh bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.

The etching was made by Charles Paul Jean-Baptiste de Bourgevin Vialart de Saint-Morys after the drawing, which was then in his possession. Vialart de Saint-Morys was a collector of Old Master drawings and amateur printmaker who published two groups of prints after drawings in his own collection, the first group dated 1780-89 and the second 1792-94.
