Christ appearing to Peter ['Quo vadis Domine?']

c.1545-91

Engraving | 27.8 x 35.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852872

An engraving reproducing a composition corresponding to one of the scenes designed by Raphael and painted in monochrome on the window-embrasures of the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican. Lettered with attribution of the design to Raphael. The name of the city of Rome is lettered at lower right. Traces of partially scratched inscriptions at both lower left and right. With quote in Latin on the building at centre.

This print is related to an engraving of the same subject by Giulio Bonasone (Bartsch XV, p.119, no.41), of which it is generally considered to be a reversed copy. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
