Bust of a long-haired youth [from 'The School of Athens']

dated 1841

Engraving | 40.1 x 31.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852534

A print reproducing (in reverse) the head and shoulders of the white-robed figure, standing at the bottom of the stairs on the left of Raphael's 'School of Athens', painted in c.1509-10 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. The figure - which is identified as Federico da Urbino on the print - has been often interpreted as Hypatia of Alexandria, depicted in the likeness of Francesco Maria della Rovere (1490-1538).
