A woman with two children on her lap, and a third standing on the left [Charity]
c.1853-76Albumen print | RCIN 852979
A photograph of a drawing now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.294). The drawing is thought to be a study for the figure of Charity, painted by Raphael's workshop to the right of Pope Urban I in the Sala di Costantino in the Vatican. The attribution of the drawing is controversial, with some scholars attributing it to Raphael and others to one of his workshop artists (Giulio Romano). It has also been formerly described as a copy either from the fresco or from another drawing. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
An engraving of this subject dated 1643 (signed with the monograms DBIC (see Nagler, II, no.988) and VDC (see Nagler, V, no.1083)) can be found at RCIN 852978.
