A view of the so-called 'Nuova Loggia Pia' in the Vatican

A photograph showing a view of the so-called 'Nuova Loggia Pia' (or 'Loggia Pia') decorated by Nicola Consoni (1814-84), Pietro Galli (1804-77) and Alessandro Mantovani (1814-92) in the Vatican, after a design by Tommaso Minardi (1787-1871). Not in Ruland (1876).

The so-called 'Nuova Loggia Pia' is located on the second floor of the Vatican Palace, on the eastern facade (built at the end of the sixteenth century), and was decorated during the pontificate of Pius IX (r. 1846-78). As shown in this photograph, the 'Nuova Loggia Pia' frescoes depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. The decorative scheme emulates that of the loggia painted by the workshop of Raphael, also on the second floor of the Vatican Palace, but on the western facade (c.1517-19). An undated, hand-written annotation on the master copy of Ruland's Raphael Collection Catalogue housed in the Print Room at Windsor Castle mistakenly implies that the photograph is a view of Raphael's Loggia.
