AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A study for the figure of Moses in 'The gathering of manna'

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 38.0 x 23.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853679

A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as then in the collection of J. Malcolm and considered a study by Raphael for the figure of Moses in the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'The gathering of manna' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the eighth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
