CLAUDE-MARIE-FRANÇOIS DIEN (1787-1865)

A Pope in a gestatorial chair followed by a crowd including a Cardinal on horseback

c.1807-1855

Crayon-manner | 50.0 x 34.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852689

A facsimile of a drawing attributed to Giulio Romano now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.937). Lettered with artists' names and location of the work. Stamped with the blind stamp of the 'Chalcographie du Louvre, Musées Nationaux' (variant of Lugt 1695).

The drawing reproduced in this print is generally regarded as one of Giulio’s discarded designs for the Costantine cycle in the Sala di Costantino in the Vatican, painted between 1520 and 1524. Another related drawing is in Stockholm (inv. no.329), and the finished modello is now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no.1948). A photograph of the drawing in the Louvre can be found at RCIN 852688.

Ruland (1876) associated the drawing with Raphael's fresco of 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple', executed in 1511-12 in the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican.
