FERDINAND PILOTY THE ELDER (1786-1844)

A detail of two women from 'The gathering of manna'

published c.1811-16

Lithograph | 17.5 x 13.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853677

A lithograph by Piloty reproducing a detail of two women from a drawing, once probably in Munich, after the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'The gathering of manna' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the eighth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with attribution of the composition to Raphael and signed by the printmaker. Trimmed to image. Published in Christian von Mannlich, Les Oeuvres Lithographiques (1811-16), vol. 3, 30.

Les Oeuvres Lithographiques reproduced drawings in the collection of the King of Bavaria

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
