AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The entry of Cardinal Giovanni de' Medici into Florence after the death of his father, Lorenzo de' Medici

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 20.7 x 24.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853091

A photograph of a drawing now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.297). The composition occurs in the frieze-like scene below 'The Stoning of St Stephen', one of the ten tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel, designed by Raphael and his studio in c.1514-15. The scenes in the tapestry borders illustrate episodes from the life of Pope Leo X. A number of drawings of this subject survive.

The Oxford drawing has sometimes been described as the original modello for the tapestry border. Other drawings of this subject are mentioned in the Albertina (inv. nos.228, 229), Louvre (inv. no.4013; representing the entire tapestry border), Darmstadt, ex Collection of Baron Marochetti, and Teylers Museum (inv. no.A* 34).
