PIETRO SANTI BARTOLI (1635-1700)

The conspirators against the Medici are condemned and executed

c.1655-1690

Etching | 12.7 x 29.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853148

A print reproducing, in reverse, the left-hand section of the border below 'The Conversion of Saul', one of the ten Sistine Chapel tapestries designed by Raphael under commission of Pope Leo X. Lettered below image with artists' names, publisher's address and text in Latin describing the subject. With plate number: 8, within image.

The subject matter is object of debate: generally interpreted as 'The conspirators against the Medici being condemned', it has also been described as illustrating Saul's persecution of the Christians (Passavant) or events following the martyrdom of St Stephen (Raphael: Cartoons and Tapestries 2010).

From a series of 15 plates (including title-page with dedication to Leopoldo de’ Medici) after the monochromatic frieze-like scenes illustrating episodes from the life of Pope Leo X in the borders of the Sistine Chapel tapestries. The plates were etched by Pietro Santi Bartoli and the series was published in Rome by Gian Giacomo de Rossi.
