St Paul striking Elymas blind in front of the proconsul Sergius Paulus

published 1 November 1837

Etching | RCIN 853155

A print after the cartoon executed by Raphael and his workshop for the tapestry of 'The Conversion of the Proconsul' (Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 13, 6-12), one from a set of ten tapestries illustrating episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Lettered with title, production details (including publication date) and Bible quote (Acts 13, 11-12).

The tapestry cartoon reproduced in this print is one of the seven that have survived; they are all part of the Royal Collection, and since 1865 are on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The ten original tapestries woven in the workshop of Pieter van Aelst are currently housed in the Vatican Museums.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
