SIMON GRIBELIN (1661-1733)

Set of prints reproducing Raphael's Cartoons

1700-20

Engraving | RCIN 853009

A series of 8 prints (including frontispiece) reproducing the so-called Raphael Cartoons, a set of seven full-scale designs by Raphael and his studio for tapestries to be hung in the Sistine Chapel. The cartoons, currently on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum from the Royal Collection, were then housed in the Cartoon Gallery at Hampton Court. The series was engraved and published by Simon Gribelin, with dedication to Queen Anne. It first came out in 1707, and was reissued in 1720. The prints show the Cartoons in reverse.
