AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Gonfaloniere Ridolfi addressing the Florentine crowd

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 13.4 x 30.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853138

A photograph of a drawing now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.4012). The composition corresponds with that of a scene in the border below 'The Death of Ananias', one of the ten Sistine Chapel tapestries designed by Raphael under commission of Pope Leo X. The drawing has sometimes been described as a preparatory study by Francesco Penni or as an anonymous copy after the tapestry composition. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
