GIOVANNI VOLPATO (1733-1803)

Decorative pilaster incorporating the 'Border with the Theological Virtues'

dated 1776

Engraving with etching | 94.5 x 49.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853132

A print on two joined sheets representing a vertical pilaster decorated with grotesque ornament and incorporating various motifs, including the Three Theological Virtues (central panel, from top to bottom: Faith, Hope, Charity). Dated and lettered with artists' names. Numbered at upper left: No. 11. Published in G. Volpato and G. Ottaviani, 'Loggie de Rafaele nel Vaticano', vol.III, plate 11.

The central vertical panel is derived from the border woven along the side edge of 'The Death of Ananias', one of the Sistine Chapel tapestries designed by Raphael upon commission of Pope Leo X now in the Vatican Museums; it is generally known as the 'Border of the Three Theological Virtues'.
