AFTER A WORK COPYING PIETRO PERUGINO (CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE C.1450-FONTIGNANO 1523)

Two figures seen from behind

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 19.6 x 14.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854659

A photograph of a drawing depicting two standing men seen from behind now in the Musée Condé, Chantilly (inv. no. 63 (55)), where it is catalogued as a copy after Raphael. Annotated on the verso.

This drawing has been catalogued by the Musée Condé (see Bibliographic References) as a copy after a drawing in the Sketchbook of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice (inv. no. 20 verso; a photograph of which can be found at RCIN 854657), which is squared up, although it has not been established whether this is actually to be attributed to a later hand, as the squaring up does not feature either in the etching published in 1829 by Luigi Celotti (see RCIN 854658 for it) or in this copy at Chantilly. Ferino Pagden (see Bibliographic References) catalogued the figure depicted to the right as a copy of one of the apostles in the 'Delivery of the Keys', frescoed c. 1481-1482 by Pietro Perugino in the Sistine Chapel, Vatican. It has been suggested that the man at the left could have been copied from a figure in the left background of the same fresco.
