The head of Satan
c.1853-1876Albumen print | 15.4 x 7.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854429
This drawing has been interpreted as a study for the 'Devil' in the altarpiece of St Nicholas of Tolentino, which was commissioned from Raphael by Andrea di Tommaso Baronci in 1500. The altarpiece, completed in 1501, was subsequently dismembered and survives only in four fragments (Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples, inv. no.50; Brescia, Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, inv no.149; Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no.RF 1981-55). See also RCINs 851433 and 851432. See Bibliographic References.
