MATTHIAS OESTERREICH (1716-78)

Studies of heads and drapery

dated 1752

Etching | 18.4 x 24.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854417

An etching reproducing a drawing that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being in the collection of Count Brühl at the time this print was made (1752). This print is signed and dated by the printmaker and inscribed with the location of the drawing and the attribution to Raphael. Published as plate 22 in "Recueil de quelques desseins de plusieurs habiles maitres tirès du cabinet de S. E. Ms.gr le prem. ministre comte de Brühl". Annotated on the verso.

Brühl's collection was bought after his death by Catherine the Great and nit is now at the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, where presumably this drawing is kept.
