AFTER ANTONIO ALLEGRI CORREGGIO (C. 1489-1534)
St Paul
c.1853-1876Albumen print | 13.9 x 16.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854372
A photograph of a red chalk drawing by Correggio (c.1520-1522) now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 258).
The sitting nude figure is a study for the so-called St Paul in Correggio's dome fresco in San Giovanni Evangelista, Parma. The drawing is squared up for transfer. The former attribution of the drawing to Raphael was probably based on certain similarity to the Albertina study of Matthew for the Transfiguration (inv. no. 237r).
