ALPHONSE-ALEXANDRE LEROY (1820-1902)

St John for a Transfiguration

c.1840-1870

Etching | 32.3 x 22.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854407

An etching by Alphonse-Alexandre Leroy reproducing a drawing by Raphael (c. 1498-1499) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. RF 49). This print is lettered with an attribution to Raphael and signed by the printmaker.

Joannides (see Bibliographic References) interpreted this drawing as a nude study for or after St John in the 'Transfiguration' frescoed by Pietro Perugino in the Collegio del Cambio, Perugia (1496-1500). Ruland (1876) catalogued the drawing as in "peruginesque" style and as then in the collection of Édouard Gatteaux in Paris.
