AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A sculpted figure of Victory

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 37.4 x 26.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854564

A photograph of a drawing depicting a sculpted figure of Victory now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.138 verso). This drawing is on the verso of a sheet depicting Jehovah in a flaming cloud (see RCIN 852766 for a photograph of the recto). Annotated on the verso.

Parker (see Bibliographic References) catalogued this drawing and another one depicting the same figure (inv. no. WA1846.140; see RCIN 854562 for a photograph of it) as by Baldassarre Peruzzi and both copied from the spandrels of the Arch of Titus, Rome.

The recto of this sheet is connected with the composition of 'Moses before the Burning Bush', designed by Raphael and painted in the vault of the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican. The authorship of the drawing (currently attributed to Raphael, but formerly ascribed to Peruzzi) is the subject of much debate.
