MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

A scene from a bas-relief

c.1510-1520

Engraving | 15.0 x 17.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854611

An engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting two fauns carrying a child in a basket. Trimmed within the platemark.

This engraving has been catalogued by the British Museum (see Bibliographic References) as showing the right-hand end of a sarcophagus, now in the National Museum in Naples, but at the time of this print in Palazzo Venezia, Rome. Shoemaker (see Bibliographic References) dates the engraving depicting the two fauns c.1513-1515 and as probably based on a drawing by Raphael of the sarcophagus scene. Marcantonio used the front of the same sarcophagus as a basis for an engraving depicting a Bacchanal (see Bibliographic References).
