AFTER A WORK BY THE CIRCLE OF MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (CAPRESE 1475-ROME 1564)

A man holding a torch

c.1860-1876

Carbon print | 34.4 x 16.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854365

A photograph of a black chalk drawing depicting a man holding a torch in his hands now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle (RCIN 990340). Annotated on the verso.

This drawing is currently attributed to the school of Michelangelo (see Bibliographic References) while in the inventory of George III's collection it was attributed to Raphael. It is now believed to be a copy of a figure on a sheet of studies at Chantilly (B.B. 1397).

In this photograph, it is possible to observe the drawing before conservation treatment that in the early twentieth century caused the loss of much of the sheet's pen and ink.
