AFTER A WORK BY THE CIRCLE OF POLIDORO DA CARAVAGGIO (C.1499-C.1543)

A man carrying a burden

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 21.2 x 16.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854367

A photograph of a pen and ink drawing now in the British Museum (inv. no Pp, 2.81), where it is attributed to the circle of Polidoro da Caravaggio. Annotated on the verso.

This drawing depicts a man carrying a burden on his shoulder and other studies and it was originally believed to be by Raphael. Pouncey and Gere (see Bibliographic References) catalogued another drawing in the British Museum (inv. no. Pp,2.80, see RCIN 854370 for a photograph of it) as being very similar in style to the one catalogued here.
