A female head
c.1853-1876Albumen print | 19.2 x 13.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854420
A photograph of a drawing of a woman's head attributed to Pietro Perugino now in the Royal Library, Windsor (RCIN 912797). Annotated on the verso.
The same head occurs with two others on a sheet of the so-called Libretto di Raffaello in the Accademia, Venice (see RCIN 854418 for a photograph of the sheet and information about the sketchbook). Ferino Pagden (see Bibliographic References) noted that the Libretto di Raffaello sheet was interpreted by Ernst Steinmann as being related to the fresco of 'The finding of Moses', painted by Pietro Perugino in the Sistine Chapel, Vatican and destroyed in 1540 by Michelangelo's 'Last Judgement'. Others scholars have associated the heads depicted in this drawing with other compositions in the Sistine Chapel.
Martin Clayton (see Bibliographic References) noted the Peruginesque character of the head of the Royal Collection drawing, though it is not certain whether it is an autograph drawing by Perugino or a faithful copy.
